A Century of Public Service
In 2016, the American Board of Ophthalmology celebrates a century of professional excellence among board certified ophthalmologists. This website is intended to honor every diplomate who has demonstrated the utmost commitment to high standards in the practice of ophthalmology and pay tribute to the individuals who have been instrumental in keeping ophthalmology’s culture of excellence alive.
About the Board
Our mission is to serve the public by improving the quality of ophthalmic practice through a process of certification and maintenance of certification that fosters excellence and encourages continual learning.
One hundred years and 30,000 certificates later, the American Board of Ophthalmology continues to issue the public’s most trusted credential for specialty knowledge, skills, and experience in ophthalmology.
Announcements, news releases, and upcoming events in support of the 100th anniversary of physician board certification will be posted here.
Building a Culture of Patient Safety
In 2015, the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) called together leaders in ophthalmology and medicine to launch a critical new initiative centered on building a culture of patient safety. Join us March 12 at 1:30 PM PST for a live webcast where leaders in ophthalmology will continue this important conversation.
Advancing Excellence in Eye Care

For physicians, what it means to be excellent evolves with every new discovery in medicine and breakthrough in technology. To remain at our highest level, we have to work continuously–and most importantly, we have to work together.
